How to Make Elderberry Syrup
Elderberry syrup is a popular remedy for immune support due to its high antioxidant and vitamin C content. Making your own syrup at home is simple and allows you to control the ingredients. This recipe makes about 3 cups of syrup.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh or ½ cup dried elderberries
- 3 cups water
- 1 cup honey (or to taste)
- Optional: 1 cinnamon stick, 1 tsp cloves, 1 tsp ginger
Instructions:
- Preparation:
- If using fresh elderberries, remove berries from their stems and rinse thoroughly.
- If using dried elderberries, there’s no need to rinse.
- Cooking:
- Combine the elderberries, water, and optional spices in a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour until the liquid is reduced by half.
- Straining:
- Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a bowl to remove the berries and spices and preserve the liquid. Use the back of a spoon to press out as much liquid as possible.
- Adding Honey:
- Once the liquid is lukewarm, add the honey and stir until well combined. Do not add honey to hot liquid, as it can destroy its beneficial properties.
- Bottling:
- Pour the syrup into a sterilized glass jar or bottle and store it in the refrigerator. It can for up to three months in the refrigerator.
- If you want it to be shelf-stable, consider canning the jars with a pressure cooker or water bath.
Dosage:
- For daily immune support, take 1 tablespoon per day.
- If you’re feeling under the weather, take 1 tablespoon every 2-3 hours.
